1. National Tribunals Commission & Tribunal Reforms

Why in News?

The Union government has framed the National Tribunals Commission Rules, 2026 to standardise recruitment, eligibility, service conditions and the process for dealing with misconduct complaints relating to tribunal posts. The Commission will handle appointments to 16 tribunals and appellate bodies.

UPSC/PPSC Importance

Important for tribunal reforms, judicial independence, separation of powers, administrative justice, appointment mechanisms and judicial review.

Prelims Facts

  • The National Tribunals Commission will be headquartered in Delhi.
  • It consists of a Chairperson and four members.
  • Two members are judicial and two are technical members.
  • A retired Supreme Court judge or retired Chief Justice of a High Court can head the Commission.
  • The process for filling tribunal vacancies is to begin at least six months before the vacancy arises.
  • Tribunals are closely linked with Articles 323A and 323B of the Constitution.

2. Manipur Suspension of Operations (SoO) Pact

Why in News?

The Union Home Ministry is yet to extend the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact with Kuki-Zo insurgent groups in Manipur after the latest one-year agreement expired. The issue has returned to focus amid continuing ethnic violence and security concerns in the State.

The Court had earlier orally referred to the rights of conscientious objectors.
