1. Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls

Why in News?

The revision of electoral rolls continues to remain in focus. In Uttarakhand, the final electoral roll after the Special Intensive Revision exercise contains about 71.59 lakh electors, with large-scale deletions as well as fresh additions during the revision process.

Important for Election Commission of India, electoral rolls, free and fair elections, voter registration, electoral integrity and democratic participation.

  • Article 324 provides for the Election Commission of India.
  • Preparation and revision of electoral rolls are governed primarily by the Representation of the People Act, 1950.

Why in News?

The Andhra Pradesh government has approached the Supreme Court challenging a High Court decision concerning reservation for Backward Classes in local-body elections. The dispute has again brought the constitutional framework governing reservation in Panchayats and Municipalities into focus.
