UPSC Eligibility Criteria

Nationality

For IAS and IPS, the candidate must be a citizen of India.

Educational Qualification

Candidate must hold a graduate degree from a recognised university. Final year students can also apply subject to conditions.

Age Limit

General category: 21 to 32 years. Age relaxation is applicable for reserved categories as per rules.

Number of Attempts

General: 6 attempts. OBC: 9 attempts. SC/ST: attempts as per age limit.

UPSC CSE – Three Stages of Examination

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

Objective type screening test. Marks are not counted in final merit.

Stage 2: Main Examination

Written descriptive exam to test depth, analysis, expression and understanding.

Stage 3: Personality Test

Interview to assess personality, judgement, awareness, communication and administrative temperament.

Negative Marking in UPSC Prelims

There is negative marking for incorrect answers in UPSC Prelims.

For each wrong answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that question is deducted.
  • If more than one answer is marked, it is treated as wrong.
  • If a question is left blank, there is no penalty.
  • Accuracy, elimination technique and revision are very important.

Optional Subject in UPSC Mains

UPSC Mains includes one optional subject consisting of two papers. Each paper carries 250 marks, making the optional subject worth 500 marks in total.
