1. Supreme Court, National Song & Freedom of Conscience
Why in News?
The Supreme Court observed that a person cannot be subjected to penal consequences merely for refusing to sing the National Song when the refusal is based on conscientious or religious grounds. The Court referred to constitutional protections relating to religious freedom and the principle laid down in Bijoe Emmanuel v. State of Kerala (1986).
