1. India–New Zealand Ties Elevated to Strategic Partnership

Why in News?

India and New Zealand elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership. The two countries agreed to strengthen maritime security, naval logistics, hydrographic data sharing, counter-terrorism cooperation and Indo-Pacific engagement, while setting a target of doubling bilateral trade to ₹35,000 crore by 2030.

Important for India’s Indo-Pacific strategy, maritime diplomacy, trade diversification, defence cooperation, rules-based international order, freedom of navigation and engagement with Pacific countries.

2. Over 23 Lakh Names Deleted from SIR Draft Electoral Rolls

Why in News?

Nearly 24 lakh names were deleted from the draft electoral rolls of Odisha, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu during the third phase of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Relevant for electoral reforms, powers and responsibilities of the Election Commission of India, voting rights, transparency of electoral rolls, inclusion of vulnerable groups and democratic accountability.

  • Electoral rolls are prepared and revised under the supervision of the Election Commission of India.
  • Draft electoral rolls are open to claims and objections before publication of the final roll.
  • Deletion may occur due to death, permanent shifting, multiple enrolment or non-traceability.
  • Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu recorded the highest deletion rate, close to 30%.
  • Odisha recorded the highest absolute number of deletions at about 20.12 lakh.
  • The final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on September 11, 2026.

3. One-Fourth of India’s Monsoon Rain Evaporates Mid-Air

Why in News?

A study by researchers at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, estimated that nearly one-fourth of India’s monsoon rainfall evaporates before reaching the ground. It is described as the first observational estimate of raindrop evaporation over India.

Important for Indian monsoon science, climate modelling, water availability, precipitation efficiency, atmospheric processes and improvement of weather forecasting.

  • Raindrops may partially or completely evaporate while falling through dry air below clouds.
  • The evaporation rate varies with humidity, temperature and size of raindrops.
  • Researchers used stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen to estimate evaporation.
  • Heavier isotopes become relatively concentrated in the remaining raindrop during evaporation.
  • Samples of rainwater and atmospheric vapour were collected during the 2019 monsoon in Pune.
  • The findings can improve the representation of rainfall in weather and climate models.

4. Indian Navy Commissions INS Mahendragiri

Why in News?

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mahendragiri, the sixth advanced Project 17A-class stealth frigate, at Visakhapatnam. The warship strengthens India’s indigenous naval-design and shipbuilding capabilities.

5. Government Reiterates Vande Mataram Protocol

Why in News?

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs directed States and Central Ministries to strictly follow the protocol that when both Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana are performed at an official event, the National Song must be played or sung first.

6. FCRA Amendment Bill and Regulation of Foreign Donations

Why in News?

The Union Home Minister assured representatives of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India that the Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill, 2026 was intended to regulate foreign funding and was not directed against any religious community.

7. West Bengal Forms Committee to Examine Draft Uniform Civil Code

Why in News?

The West Bengal government constituted a high-level committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to examine a draft Uniform Civil Code concerning marriage, divorce and succession for residents of the State.
