📰 Editorial Focus – India’s Youth Employment Challenge
Editorial Theme
India’s employment problem is not limited to preparing students for competitive examinations. A deeper structural challenge exists in the availability of quality, secure and productive employment for educated youth.
Rising expenditure on private coaching, intense competition for limited professional seats and weak salaried employment opportunities demonstrate the gap between education, skills and labour-market outcomes.
Key Issues
- Rising cost of private coaching
- Intense competition for limited quality professional seats
- Educated youth unemployment
- Skill mismatch
- Weak manufacturing employment
- Informal and insecure jobs
- Need for labour-intensive growth
- Education-to-employment transition
Why is the Debate Important?
India’s demographic dividend will provide long-term economic benefits only if education expansion is matched by productive employment, employable skills and sufficient high-quality jobs.
Key Concepts for UPSC
- Demographic Dividend
- Educated Unemployment
- Skill Mismatch
- Manufacturing Employment
- Human Capital
- Labour-Intensive Growth
- Inclusive Growth
