4. ₹10,000-Crore SME Growth Fund

Why in News?

The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹10,000-crore SME Growth Fund aimed at improving access to growth-oriented capital for small and medium enterprises.

Why is it Important?

Many viable SMEs can access conventional loans but face a shortage of long-term risk and equity capital required for expansion, technology adoption, innovation and participation in larger value chains.

Prelims & Economy Concepts

  • Equity finance differs from conventional debt finance.
  • MSMEs play an important role in employment, manufacturing, exports and regional development.
  • Growth capital can help firms scale operations without relying entirely on additional debt.
  • The initiative has relevance for manufacturing, services, technology and strategic value chains.

Mains Perspective

GS-III: Indian Economy, MSMEs, Industrial Policy, Employment & Inclusive Growth

Revision Note: SME Growth = Finance + Technology + Scale + Productivity + Employment + Global Value Chains.

5. Census 2027 — Digital Census & Caste Enumeration

Why in News?

Fresh developments relating to Census 2027 have brought the coming population enumeration exercise into focus. It will mark major changes in the way India conducts its Census.

Why Census 2027 is Significant

  • It is set to be India’s first digital Census.
  • It will include caste enumeration beyond Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
  • Provisional population data is expected after completion of the enumeration process.
  • Special arrangements are required for snow-bound and difficult geographical areas.

Prelims Facts

  • Census operations are conducted under the Census Act, 1948.
  • The Census is conducted under the authority of the Union Government.
  • Census and National Population Register (NPR) are not the same exercise.
  • India traditionally conducts a population Census on a decennial basis.
  • Census data is critical for planning, welfare policy and demographic analysis.

Mains Perspective

GS-I: Population & Society | GS-II: Governance, Welfare & Public Policy

Revision Note: Census = Population Data + Planning + Representation + Welfare Targeting + Evidence-Based Governance.

6. Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 — IceCube & Cosmic Neutrinos

Why in News?

Physicist Francis Halzen, pioneer of the IceCube neutrino observatory, has been recognised with the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for work that opened a new window into high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and the violent universe.

What is IceCube?

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory uses about a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice at the South Pole and thousands of optical sensors to detect signals produced when neutrinos interact with matter.

Prelims Facts

  • Neutrinos are electrically neutral elementary particles.
  • They interact only very weakly with matter, making them difficult to detect.
  • IceCube contains 5,160 optical sensors.
  • It detects Cherenkov light produced following neutrino interactions.
  • A blazar is an active galaxy whose powerful jet is directed roughly towards Earth.
  • IceCube helped establish neutrino astronomy as a new way of observing the universe.

Mains Perspective

GS-III: Science & Technology, Space and Fundamental Physics

Revision Note: IceCube = Antarctic Ice + Neutrinos + Cherenkov Radiation + Cosmic Sources + New Astronomy.

7. Digital Payments, UPI & Rising Cybercrime

Why in News?

The Status of Policing in India Report (SPIR) 2026 has highlighted a paradox: growing adoption and trust in digital payments, particularly UPI, is also being exploited by increasingly organised cyber-fraud networks.

Prelims Facts

  • Surya is India’s first indigenous Fleet Support Ship.
  • The Fleet Support Ship programme strengthens long-duration naval operations.
  • The BrahMos procurement has been placed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.

  • The development supports India’s broader objective of defence indigenisation.

Mains Perspective

GS-III: Defence Technology, Maritime Security, Indigenisation & Security

Revision Note: Maritime Capability = Combat Platforms + Fleet Logistics + Long-Duration Deployment + Indigenous Weapons + Defence Manufacturing.

📰 Mains Focus – Siang Project, China & India’s Water Security

The debate over the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project demonstrates how modern river governance extends beyond electricity generation. The Brahmaputra system links geography, ecology, tribal livelihoods, disaster management and India-China strategic relations. Large upstream and downstream projects therefore raise questions of environmental sustainability as well as long-term water and national security.

Key Issues

  • Transboundary River Management
  • India-China Relations
  • Water Security
  • Hydropower Development
  • Himalayan Ecology
  • Tribal Rights
  • Disaster Risk
  • Sustainable Development

Mains Takeaway: Sustainable management of transboundary Himalayan rivers requires balancing strategic water security and energy needs with ecological sustainability, disaster resilience and the rights of indigenous communities.

⚡ Prelims Concept – Yarlung Tsangpo → Siang → Brahmaputra

  • Yarlung Tsangpo flows through the Tibetan region.
  • It enters India through Arunachal Pradesh.
  • In Arunachal Pradesh it is known as the Siang.
  • Further downstream, the Siang meets the Dibang and Lohit.
  • The river system then becomes the Brahmaputra in Assam.
  • The Brahmaputra ultimately flows into Bangladesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal through the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta system.

Prelims Trap: Do not treat Yarlung Tsangpo, Siang and Brahmaputra as three unrelated rivers. They represent different geographical stretches/names of the same major transboundary river system.
