1. India-Uzbekistan Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
Why in News?
India and Uzbekistan have decided to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and have set a target of $5 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030.
The two countries signed 11 agreements and agreed to deepen cooperation in uranium supply, critical minerals, mining, defence, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, tourism, education and digital public infrastructure.
A commercial agreement between NPCI International Payments Ltd. and Uzbekistan’s payment infrastructure will also allow Indian UPI applications to scan Uzbekistan’s national UZQR for merchant payments.

2. Nepal Glacial Disaster: Death Toll Rises as Rescue Operations Continue
Why in News?
Nepal continued rescue and relief operations following the catastrophic Himalayan flood triggered by a glacial collapse near the Nepal-China border.
According to the report, the death toll had reached 788, while around 2,502 persons remained missing. The disaster affected hydropower projects and settlements along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system.
Experts and specialised teams from India, China and South Korea joined rescue and forensic identification efforts.

Tamil Nadu approached the Supreme Court seeking directions to Karnataka to release 17.604 tmc ft of Cauvery water as the balance quantity due as of August 27, 2026.
Tamil Nadu argued that the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) and the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) had failed to adequately consider the accumulated backlog.

The Court had held that salary income should not automatically be used to exclude OBC candidates from non-creamy-layer status where parents are employed in PSUs or private organisations unless equivalence with government posts has been established.
The Centre has raised concerns regarding retrospective implementation and its possible impact on settled civil-service allocations, including CSE 2025 candidates.

7. Government Notifies Indian Standard Time Rules, 2026
Why in News?
The Union government has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, making Indian Standard Time the common time reference for legal, administrative, commercial and official purposes across India.
The rules will come into force 180 days after their publication in the Official Gazette. The initiative is aimed at synchronising critical systems such as banking, digital payments, telecom networks, railways, aviation and power grids.
