1. U.S.–Iran Agreement & Reopening of Strait of Hormuz

Why in News?

The United States and Iran have reached a preliminary agreement to end the ongoing conflict, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and begin negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions.

Background

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea. Nearly one-fifth of global oil trade passes through this route.

UPSC Explanation

The crisis had raised fears of disruptions in global energy supply chains. Any instability in the Strait directly impacts crude oil prices, inflation, shipping costs and energy-importing countries like India. The reopening of the Strait is expected to stabilize global markets and improve maritime security.

Prelims Facts

  • Strait of Hormuz connects Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
  • Approximately 20% of global oil trade passes through it.
  • Iran lies to the north and Oman-UAE to the south.
  • It is one of the world’s most strategic chokepoints.

Mains Perspective

GS-II: International Relations, West Asia
GS-III: Energy Security, Maritime Security

Revision Note: Strait of Hormuz = Energy Security + Maritime Trade + India’s Oil Imports.

Why in News?

India’s merchandise exports touched a record $45.2 billion in May 2026. However, imports also increased significantly leading to a wider trade deficit.

UPSC Explanation

Exports contribute to economic growth, foreign exchange reserves and employment generation. However, if imports grow faster than exports, the trade deficit widens and can affect the current account balance.

Prelims Facts

  • Engineering goods exports rose sharply.
  • Electronics exports crossed $5 billion.
  • Trade Deficit = Imports – Exports.
  • India’s major export sectors include engineering, chemicals and electronics.

Mains Perspective
